Brett van Coller

About

Brett has over 24 years’ experience in exploration and mining projects across Africa.

After graduating from the University of Cape Town in 1995 with Honours in Geology, Brett joined the Mineral Services Group responsible for the planning and implementation of grassroots exploration projects. 

During this period Brett was responsible for developing the company’s field exploration techniques.  He was also intergral to the development of the Mothae Kimberlite Project from conception through to economic evaluation.

 

In 2006, Brett became a founding member of Remote Exploration Services.  Today, as Managing Director, he is responsible for the overall development, management and financial sustainability of the Company.

Peter Hollick
Technical Director

About
Peter is a Registered Professional Natural Scientist and graduated from UCT in 1989 with an Honours Degree in Geology. 
 
Prior to joining the Mineral Services Group in 2002 to manage their marine operation, he gained broad industry experience working as Mine Geologist for Anglo, for Benguela Concessions as Chief Geologist and Exploration Manager and culminating as Chief Geologist for TransHex responsible for all technical aspects of marine diamond mining operations along the west coast of South Africa and Namibia. 
 
Since joining Remote Exploration Services (RES) as Technical Director in 2006, Peter has gained further experience in both diamond and non-diamond exploration and evaluation projects throughout Africa.  

Peter’s key area of responsibility is ensuring the technical excellence of all aspects of RES operations.

Thomas Krebs
Technical Director

About

Thomas is an exploration geologist with 17 years of industry experience, largely focussed on base and precious metal exploration projects. He holds a BSc. in Earth Science from the University of Berne, Switzerland (2006) and a MSc. in Exploration Geology from Rhodes University, South Africa (2010). 

Thomas has extensive experience in various aspects of mineral exploration and is the technical lead on several projects. Areas of particular interest include: geochemical exploration, drilling projects, desktop reviews, mineral system models, and multidisciplinary results integration and interpretation. In the last couple of years Thomas has been immersed in the project generation, target generation, and research and development space.

Thomas is discovery driven and passionate about exploration, rocks and mentoring of young geologists to grow and reach their potential.

Thomas K

Daniel Jacobs
Consulting Geologist

About
After completing a BSc. in Applied Earth Sciences in 2006, BSc. Honours in Geology in 2007 and Masters in Geology at the University of Stellenbosch, Daniel joined Remote Exploration Services in 2011 and has more than 10 years of geological exploration experience primarily in the evaluation of kimberlites in South Africa, Lesotho, Angola and Botswana.
 
He is highly experienced in core logging, kimberlite pipe modelling, petrographic analysis of polished slabs and thin sections, management of diamond bulk and micro diamond sampling programmes, kimberlite indicator mineral analysis for the evaluation of diamond bearing potential and diamond sorting.
 
Daniel’s skill set extends to geochemical and geophysical data QC, processing and modelling.  Daniel is also a member of the SEG - Young Professionals, SACNASP, GSSA and GSN.

Lutendo Mavhungu
Senior Geologist

About

Lutendo holds an Honours degree in Geology from Rhodes University and is currently enrolled in an Economic Geology MSc course at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg.

 

Lutendo joined Remote Exploration Services as a geologist in 2014. In her current Project Geologist role, her responsibilities include the management and implementation of field exploration programs, remote sensing, target generation, report writing, and client liaison.

 

Since joining RES, she has been involved in various exploration projects, spanning both greenfields and brownfields. Lutendo is passionate about mineral exploration and is dedicated to mentoring and training young professionals.

Dr. Stephan Dunn

Principal Geoscientist

About

Dr Stephan Dunn is a registered Professional Natural Scientist (SACNASP) and Principal Geologist at Remote Exploration Services. He holds a PhD in Geology from Stellenbosch University (2021), where his doctoral research focused on Neoproterozoic copper-gold mineralisation and orogenic gold systems along the southwestern margin of the Tanzania Craton; work that produced five peer-reviewed publications in leading international geoscience journals.

 

Since joining RES, Stephan has led and overseen exploration programmes spanning greenfields through brownfields across a broad range of African metallogenic provinces, with a technical focus on sediment-hosted copper, orogenic gold, and structurally-controlled Cu-Au-Ag deposits. His project experience spans the Kalahari Copperbelt, Central African Copperbelt, Damara Belt and Arabian-Nubian Shield, among others.

 

In his current role, he oversees technical project planning, peer review, client reporting and QAQC, while driving internal R&D initiatives and knowledge-sharing across the RES geoscience team. He is a member of the Society of Economic Geologists (SEG) and the Geological Society of South Africa (GSSA).

Eric Kruger
Project Geologist / Business & Resource Manager

About

Eric joined Remote Exploration Services in 2019 and has progressed through the organisation from Geologist to Project Geologist and currently serves as Business & Resource Manager.

Prior to joining RES, Eric worked on exploration projects throughout Southeast Asia across a range of commodities including gold, manganese, coal and nickel laterite. During this time he was also involved in the establishment and management of a precious metals refinery, overseeing gold ore processing and refining operations.

Since joining RES, Eric has been involved in the planning, management and execution of geological and geophysical exploration projects across Africa. He has experience in geological core logging, as well as gravity, magnetic, induced polarisation (IP), electromagnetic (EM) and transient electromagnetic (TEM) geophysical surveys.

Eric manages multidisciplinary project teams and is responsible for the coordination of geological and geophysical programmes from project planning through to execution and reporting. He has worked extensively with major mining companies and has experience operating within stringent health, safety, environmental and quality management systems.

Aaron completed his B.Sc. Hons in Geology at UCT in 2016. Prior to joining RES in 2020 he worked in the private and public sector as a geohydrologist.

 

Aaron's responsibilities include project management, drill rig management, AirCore and diamond core logging, geophysical surveys and soil sampling.

Peter Cloete
Project Geologist

About

Peter joined RES in the beginning of 2019 as a fresh university graduate from Rhodes. Peter’s study focus was on structural interpretation of shear zones in the Namaqua-Natal belt. The 4-week field school, sponsored by RES, opened his eyes to exploration and drew his interest.

Since joining the team, Peter has run a soil sampling program in Kosovo, managed drill rigs and core logging in Botswana and has logged over 10 000m's of core for a Multi-National Mining Company in the Northern Cape.

Peter C

Gary Mesko
Project Geologist

About

Gary joined the RES team in 2021. He holds a PhD in Geochemistry from Columbia University in the City of New York.

 

He uses quantitative techniques to gain insight about the solid earth system, and the processes that cycle matter between its reservoirs. Prior to his move to Cape Town, Gary gained a wealth of experience in geochemistry through contributions to numerous projects in various laboratories at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory. His primary research focus was on the role of magma in continental rifting.

 

Gary is a perpetual learner driven by curiosity, and enjoys communicating science at all levels. He has presented research at international conferences and introduced the geosciences to students at many levels.

Jorinda van Coller
Project Geologist

About

Jorinda completed a BSc Hons degree in Geology at the University of Pretoria with a particular focus on the geochronological dating of the red granite suite of the Kunene Anorthosite Complex, Angola. Her second major was in the field of GIS and Remote Sensing.

Exploration work including geological, geotechnical and geomettalurgical core logging on various commodities including: Iron (South Africa), Copper (Namibia, Botswana, Zambia and Angola) and Rare Earth Elements (Namibia) as well as trench logging for Lithium (Zimbabwe).

Experience in Diamond and Aircore Drill rig management, regional soil sampling and geological mapping.

Harry Lines

Project Geologist

About

Harry graduated from Stellenbosch with a BSc Hons in Earth sciences in 2019, with his thesis focusing on the dating and correlation of Dinosaur (Sauropod) eggshells From the Aix-En-Provence region of France. Continuing his education, Harry then began his Masters studies which involved formulating a method for using Remote Sensing and suitability modelling within ArcGIS to predict new fossil sites throughout the Skeleton Coast region of Namibia. Obtaining the Degree ‘summa cum laude’.

After taking a break from post graduate studies and getting involved in teaching English, Harry joined RES in February 2022. His initial work involved putting together commodity databases, working on project generation and working on a drilling project in central Namibia.

Jan Steytler

Project Geologist

About

Jan joined Remote Exploration Services in 2021. Before joining RES, Jan completed a B.Sc (Hons) Earth Science and an M.ScAgric Soil Science at Stellenbosch University.

 

His master’s thesis, “Water Treatment Residual: Potential Amendment to a Sandy Soil”, focused on utilising a water treatment sludge to amend a sandy soil. The thesis consisted of both soil physical and soil chemical analysis in addition to a greenhouse pot trail. Jan has a keen interest in geomorphology, ecosystem restoration and pedology.

 

Since joining the team, Jan has worked on a diamond drilling exploration project in southern Namibia and has gained experience in core and geotechnical logging in addition to drill rig management.

Thato Thamae

Geologist

About

Thato began working for RES in mid 2018 as a Geotechnician, surveying ground gravity, electromagnetics (time domain and frequency domain) and RTK/ArcGIS.

 

While working on various Northern Cape green and brown fields exploration projects, he has come to appreciate work in the outdoors, the value of teamwork, thorough planning and learnt some data processing techniques.

 

Thato has extensive experience in Ground Geophysics and brings much rigor and vigor in his role as Geologist.

Jason Borett

Project Geologist

About

Jason graduated from the University of Witwatersrand with a BSC Hons in Geology in 2020. Furthering his studies, Jason is completing an MSc in Economic Geology at the University of Witwatersrand with his thesis focusing on Ni-Cu potential of ultramafic rocks in the Molopo Farms Complex.

Jason joined RES in late 2021 and has managed an exploration, geometallurgical and geotechnical core logging project on iron ore deposits in the Northern Cape. He also has experience on a core logging project in Egypt, for gold exploration.

Dylan McEwan

Project Geologist

About

Dylan completed his BSc (Hons) in Applied Geology at Stellenbosch University in 2018. Prior to joining RES in 2022, he gained valuable field experience in the exploration industry, working on several projects across Africa as a Junior Geologist.


Since joining RES, Dylan has continued to build his experience on a range of exploration programs across the continent. His work has included a regional stream sampling program and a follow-up geological mapping and diamond drilling campaign in Rwanda, a historic drillcore logging program in Egypt, and drilling programs in Zambia.

Through these projects, Dylan has worked with a variety of commodities, including lithium (Li), copper (Cu), and gold (Au), gaining experience across multiple aspects of project management and technical efficiencies.

Onele Chagi

Geologist

About

Onele joined RES in September 2023. He holds an MSc in Geology with a focus on spatial analysis of mineral deposit distribution to identify important ore-controlling structures in the Ngubevu area of the Tugela Terrane, KwaZulu-Natal. Before joining RES he worked as a data capturer, where he was responsible for capturing and managing geological data related to exploration.

Since joining RES, Onele has worked on a gold exploration stream sediment sampling project in NE Zambia and copper exploration projects in NW Zambia and Namibia.

Maropeng Mailula

About

Maropeng joined RES in August of 2023. Before joining RES, she completed her BSc (Hons) Geology at University of Johannesburg (UJ).

 

After joining RES, Maropeng completed her MSc Geology at UJ in 2024, with her thesis focusing on the Petrography, geochemistry and age of the intrusive units of the Leinster Deposit, Kalahari Mn Field, Northern Cape.

 

Since joining RES, Maropeng has worked on projects in Namibia, Angola and Rwanda, involved in diamond drilling and AC/RC drilling programs gaining experience in geological chip and core logging, and drill rig management.

Chris Rheeder

Geoscientist

About

Chris completed a Master of Science (MSc) in Earth Science in 2023. His research focused on the characterisation of regional strain patterns within the western portion of the Saldania Belt and their implications for the structural evolution of Pan-African rocks in the Western Cape, South Africa. This work provided a strong foundation in structural geology, tectonic analysis, and geological interpretation.

Prior to joining RES in June 2025, Chris gained exploration experience across multiple African countries, working on a range of commodities including gold, copper, lithium, and rare earth elements (REEs). His work encompassed field-based exploration, geological interpretation, drill program management, and target evaluation.

Since joining RES, Chris has been responsible for the management and supervision of diamond drilling programmes, detailed drill core logging, and the integration of geological and geophysical datasets into three-dimensional geological models for projects within both the Kalahari Copper Belt of Botswana and the Central African Copperbelt in Angola.

Chris has a strong technical focus and a particular interest in understanding the relationship between structural architecture and mineral systems. He is passionate about applying structural geology, geological modelling, and integrated data analysis to unravel the controls on mineralisation and improve exploration outcomes.

Matthew Kievits

Geologist

About

Matthew joined RES in February of 2023, shortly after completing his BSc Hons. Geology degree at UCT.

 

During Matthew's time at UCT he worked on two research theses involving the geochemistry of a lunar meteorite and also the geochemistry of an unusual diamond bearing kimberlite in Andriesfontein. 

 

Since joining RES, Matthew has worked on soil sampling projects in Botswana and Angola as well as diamond drilling and air core drilling programs in Zambia gaining experience in geological chip and core logging and drill rig management.

Amber Jade Hindley

About

Amber joined RES in 2024 after completing an honors thesis focusing on the physical and geochemical characterization of detrital Monazite grains.

 

Whilst in the field with RES, Amber has gained experience working on a RadonX project in Namibia, exploring for lithium and uranium and has also conducted substantial geological exploration work in East Central Africa.

Steve Vromans

Operations Manager

About

Steve started working in the exploration industry in 1997, first as a Field Assistant then as a Field Technician and finally an Operations Manager in 2000, responsible for implementing and managing various field exploration programs throughout various parts of Africa. This role required Steve to establish and manage various field projects and camps which included; defining in-country safety and logistical procedures and protocols, working with local authorities and labour, managing field staff and assets (vehicles, equipment, etc) as well as managing numerous stream and soil sampling; ground geophysical; trenching and drilling programs.


In addition to managing field operations, Steve also managed operations for the Ocean Explorer dive boat out of Lambert’s Bay, diving concessions at De Punt, assisting in moving the boat and operations to Port Nolloth to work at Concession 5. During that time, he conducted a few small bathymetry surveys and surveys with the FISH. Additionally, Steve helped set up a small diamond plant and recovery unit at Noup. Over this period Steve was also responsible for managing Mineral Services’ Property Portfolio in the UK and conducting bathymetry surveys in Canada at Ekati Diamond Mine. Back in the field Steve also did extensive exploration operations related work in Botswana over this period.


As Senior Operations Manager at RES, Steve is responsible for the overall management of the company’s Operational Services, both customer-facing and internally. In this capacity he oversees the deployment of operational staff and resources as well as manage RES’ vehicle fleet and other assets. Steve is also key in ensuring all new staff are appropriately trained in Project operations and logistics and he leads Field Operations when deployed on Projects.

Ross Keen

Operations Manager

About

Ross has been with Remote Exploration Services for over 20 years, providing logistical and operational support for exploration projects throughout Africa.

 

He is responsible for operations, logistics, HSEC, training of staff, camp management and ground implementation of various geophysical surveys and geochemical soil sampling programmes all across Africa.

 

His responsibilities include the management of company equipment, vehicles and operational oversight across all of the company’s projects.

Leo Sorensen

Operations Manager

About

Leo pursued studies in Construction Science and qualified with a B.Sc. Honours in Construction Management. His first two years of work was as a junior site manager and Environmental Control Officer for a Construction Company in Namibia. The project involved building a large residential development near Windhoek. After Namibia an opportunity presented itself to be a guide for the Quest-Africa Gap year program, which he did for 8 years as the senior guide and operations manager. Leo joined RES as Operations manager in January 2023 and has since been involved in several projects around Africa as Project Operations Manager responsible for the operational, HSEC, logistics, camp management and ground implementation of geophysical surveys (Magnetics, Gravity, Radiometrics) and geochemical soil sampling programmes.

Dylan Don

Operations Manager

About

Dylan joined RES with a background in applied geosciences and extensive hands-on experience in water well drilling and environmental field operations across Southern Africa and Europe. Before joining RES, he worked with a drilling company where he was involved in groundwater monitoring, remediation projects, and various drilling operations.

Originally from Austria and now based in Cape Town, Dylan has worked on geophysical and geological field projects throughout Europe and Africa. He is passionate about practical, on-site problem solving and enjoys being part of projects that combine technical precision with hands-on work.

Outside of work, Dylan spends most of his time outdoors, off-roading, camping, and exploring remote areas.

Operations Manager

About

Juan-Pierre joined Remote Exploration Services as an Operations Manager, providing logistical and operational support for exploration projects throughout Africa. With a background in chemical process operations and engineering draughting, he brings strong technical understanding and practical field leadership to remote project environments.

 

He is responsible for the operational, logistics, fleet, and camp management functions across a range of exploration programs. His role includes coordinating accommodation and catering, overseeing camp setup and construction activities, managing company equipment and vehicles, and ensuring efficient mobilisation and field readiness for all projects. Juan Pierre also provides on-ground operational support for technical field teams and maintains oversight of day-to-day project activities.

Dr. Dale Smith

Chief Medical Officer and Health & Safety Manager

About

Dale joined RES in 2024 as Chief Medical Officer / Health and Safety Manager after an 11 year career in the South African National Defence Force. He completed his Basic Military Training in 2013 and received a Military Bursary to study Medicine through the University of Pretoria.

 

After completing his degree he served as a Medical Officer in the Military under various departments: Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine and the Intensive Care Unit.

 

Dale's key area of responsibility has been the implementation of a fit-for-purpose remote medical and HSE solution for exploration projects across Africa.

About

Joshua holds an MSc. Eng. in Mineral Economics from the University of the Witwatersrand. He joined RES in 2011 as a geologist and progressed to the role of Senior Geologist, gaining extensive experience across a diverse range of exploration and mining projects throughout Africa.


He subsequently served as General Manager, where he contributed to the coordination of the company’s operations and business units. He later assumed the role of Managing Director of Xpotential Mining Services (XMS), a subsidiary of RES, providing strategic and technical leadership across ESG and carbon market projects, while developing expertise in ISO 14001 environmental and ISO 45001 occupational health and safety management systems, GHG inventories and lender-aligned ESG frameworks.


He currently fulfils a dual role within the Group, also serving as ESG & SHEQ Manager for RES, where he focuses on the practical implementation of international best practice across field operations, while supporting client engagement, ESG alignment, and the continual improvement of SHEQ performance.

David is a South African Chartered Accountant and has vast experience in the energy industry through his audit practices working abroad and assisting smaller companies with their growth and expansion through implementation of better business practices and strategic guidance, as well as assisting companies in going through their public listings on the NYSE, LSE and JSE.

 

His industry experience includes a range of financial, management, consulting, and project focused roles in exploration, project finance, development, operations, and M&A. With a strong background in auditing and financial controls, David combines technical accounting expertise with a pragmatic approach to business growth, working closely with geologists and operational teams to translate technical projects into sound commercial outcomes.

As Office Administrator of Remote Exploration Services, Robyn is responsible for the smooth running of the office and provides logistical and operation support to the staff in the field.

 

Prior to joining RES in 2016, Robyn worked for the Mineral Services Group from 2004.

After completing a BA degree in Psychology and Criminology in 2007, Derryne joined the office team in 2011. She previously worked as an ad hoc field assistant on projects in Namibia and Botswana for RES. Derryne's roles across RES and all RES international entities include the complete Business Administration, Human Resources, Company Secretarial and Compliance, Payroll Management, Banking Management, Accounts and Operations.

Derryne has many  responsibilities, while also being the link between  the Project Geologists in the field and the office administration and support  for all RES projects.

Danielle Oliver

Senior Bookkeeper

Danielle joined Remote Exploration Services in 2007 as a Bookkeeper, where she was responsible for maintaining accurate and up-to-date financial records. Over time, her role has expanded to reflect her growing expertise and commitment to the organisation.

 

She now oversees the day-to-day finance operations across all entities, ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial reporting while contributing to the overall efficiency and performance of the department. Danielle plays an integral role in managing financial processes and strengthening internal controls.

 

In addition, she provides support and guidance to the finance team when needed. Her responsibilities also include coordinating annual audits, overseeing income tax audits, managing SARS submissions, preparing tax calculations, overseeing VAT audits, and liaising with external accounting firms on financial reporting, independent reviews, and compliance matters.

Yusrah Harris

Yusrah joined Remote Exploration Services in 2021 as a Junior Bookkeeper, responsible for maintaining and updating the field expenses, and capturing invoices.

 

She previously worked at an accounting firm for 4 years as an accounting and debtors clerk, dealing with invoicing clients, doing clients VAT, PAYE, Cashbooks, Journals, preparing financials and helping out with taxes. She is now settling into the role of junior bookkeeper at RES.

I began my career at First National Bank, where I served for a decade as a Balancing, Query, Incident, and Payroll Official. In 2023, I joined RES, where I am responsible for the maintenance and accurate updating of financial records across 7 entities.

 

My key responsibilities include daily banking operations, cashbook processing, invoice management, and comprehensive account reconciliations.
